Answer engine optimisation
Answer engine optimisation for ecommerce questions
Answer engines do not display pages. They extract the smallest unit of content that fully answers a question and attribute it. AEO is the discipline of making sure that unit exists on your site, is unambiguous, and is yours.

The principle
If the answer needs the rest of the page to make sense, it will not be used
Most ecommerce content is written as a narrative that builds. Answer engines read in fragments. A passage that depends on the paragraph above it, an earlier table, or an implied product name fails the completeness test.
- Name the subject inside the passage, not only in the heading.
- State the answer before the reasoning.
- Keep one question per passage.
- Include the constraint the answer applies under.
Fails extraction
Context-dependent writing
- 01“It also works well for that use case.”
- 02Subject implied from earlier heading
- 03Answer arrives after three paragraphs
- 04Key figure lives in a separate table
- 05Conditions never stated
Correct, readable, and unusable as an extracted answer.
Passes extraction
Self-contained writing
- 01Subject named explicitly
- 02Direct answer in the first sentence
- 03One measurable reason given
- 04Constraint stated inline
- 05Passage under 80 words
Can be lifted into an answer without any surrounding context.
Anatomy of an answer unit
Four parts, in this order
We apply this structure at template level so it scales across categories, products and guidance content rather than page by page.
The claim
A direct statement that answers the question in one sentence, with the subject named in full so the passage never relies on a heading for meaning.
The reason
One measurable, checkable justification — a specification, a threshold, a tested figure — rather than an adjective.
The condition
When the claim holds and when it does not. Exclusions are quotable because answer engines need them to narrow a response.
The confirmation
The same fact mirrored in structured data and, where relevant, corroborated by an external source so nothing contradicts.
Question coverage
Every commercial question needs an owner
We map the questions a category generates, then assign each to a specific template and passage. Unowned questions are how competitors get quoted in your category.
| Question type | Answer owner | Format | State |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definition | Category page intro | One-paragraph claim | Owned |
| Suitability | Product page FAQ | Claim + condition | Owned |
| Comparison | Comparison page | Verdict per use case | Partial |
| Specification | Product spec block | Text + schema | Owned |
| Process | Buying guidance | Numbered steps | Unowned |
| Policy | Shipping & returns facts | Direct statement | Owned |
Structured data
Schema is confirmation, not persuasion
Markup does not make a weak answer strong. It confirms that the answer on the page is the answer you intend, in a form that can be parsed without ambiguity.
- Product schema mirrors on-page specifications exactly
- Offer availability and price match rendered content
- FAQ markup only where visible questions exist
- Breadcrumb markup matches real navigation depth
- Organisation markup states brand identity consistently
- No markup describing content a user cannot see
- Review markup reflects genuine on-page reviews
- Canonical URLs consistent between schema and head
Prioritisation
Where AEO work lands first
Answer readiness is fixed in order of blast radius: template-level changes first, individual pages last.
AEO work queue
- 01Rendered content gapsMake specifications and guidance visible in server HTML
- 02Category intro rewriteReplace brand narrative with a definition passage
- 03Product FAQ templateOne question per heading, answered in two sentences
- 04Specification blocksText specs mirrored in Product schema
- 05Comparison verdictsState a recommendation per use case
- 06Policy fact pagesSingle canonical source for shipping and returns facts
AEO and GEO
Extraction and synthesis are different problems
AEO wins when a passage is lifted whole. GEO wins when many sources are compressed into a new sentence. The same page can succeed at one and fail at the other.
AEO strength
Passage-level clarity
- Self-contained answers
- Direct claims first
- Question-shaped headings
- Specification precision
GEO strength
Cross-source consistency
- Facts agree everywhere
- Entities described identically
- Reasoning models can compress
- Corroborated by third parties
Shared foundation
Retrievability
- Crawlable, rendered content
- Fast server responses
- Clean canonical structure
- Valid structured data
Common failure
Volume without structure
- Long guides with no claim
- Duplicate thin pages
- Specs trapped in images
- Contradictory product facts
Measurement
Answer readiness is scored before it is reported
We score templates rather than URLs, so improvements are attributable to a specific structural change.

FAQ
AEO questions
AEO is the practice of structuring content so a single passage answers one question completely and can be extracted and attributed without surrounding context. Instead of optimising a page to rank, you engineer the smallest unit of content that an answer engine can use directly.
Snippet work targeted one display format on one search engine. AEO applies the same passage-level discipline across every surface that extracts and attributes content, and treats structured data and factual consistency as part of the same job rather than a separate technical task.
Usually less than expected. Most sites already have the facts but express them in a form that cannot be extracted. The first phase is restructuring existing category, product and guidance templates; net-new content follows for questions nobody on the site currently owns.
Long enough to name the subject, state the claim, give one measurable reason and note the condition — typically 40 to 80 words. Beyond that, passages tend to introduce a second question and stop being cleanly extractable.
As confirmation of genuinely visible questions and answers, yes — it removes ambiguity about what the question is and where the answer ends. It is not worth adding to pages that have no real visible FAQ content.
Yes, and it usually strengthens them. Clearer definitions, explicit specifications and question-shaped headings improve comprehension for classic ranking systems as well as answer engines.
Passage-level review
See which questions your site can actually answer
We test your templates against the completeness rule, map which commercial questions have an owner, and show the structural changes that make your passages extractable.
